The material
Every Konina creation is made of brass, an alloy of recycled brass, nickel-free and hypoallergenic by composition intentionally crafted to be worn comfortably by those with sensitive skin. Each piece is polished by hand in either a gold or silver tone.
The choice of brass is deliberate. It carries the warmth and weight that a piece designed with architectural intent demands, while remaining accountable to the resources it draws from. Pieces conceived to be kept must also be made of materials that respect the wearer and the world she inhabits.
Daily care
Plated pieces ask for care. With small habits in place, its surface and presence hold longer. The process begins before the piece is on, and continues briefly at the end of each day.
Apply perfume, lotion, sunscreen, and hairspray before putting a piece on, and allow them to settle on the skin first. Direct contact with cosmetic products shortens the life of any metal finish, and brass is no exception. Once a piece is on, treat it as part of the body.
Remove pieces before swimming, showering, exercising vigorously, or any prolonged contact with water. Salt and chlorine accelerate wear of every metal finish on the market, regardless of price point. Sweat alone is not a concern for ordinary wear, but pooling perspiration or repeated saunas will affect the surface over time. Avoid abrasive contact with hard surfaces. The form is precise, and wears best when treated with care.
At the end of each day, wipe softly and store each of our pieces in our microfibre pouch. This removes oils and residues and restores the surface to its original quietness.
What to avoid
The following should be kept away from your Konina pieces wherever possible:
- Water: swimming, showering, exercising, hand-washing while wearing
- Cosmetic products: perfume, lotion, sunscreen, or hairspray applied after the piece is on
- Cleaning agents: household chemicals, alcohol, abrasive cloths, or polishing pastes designed for sterling silver or gold
- Contact with other pieces in storage, including other Konina pieces
- Direct sunlight over extended periods, including on a windowsill or in an open jewelry dish
A defect, beyond care
Care has its limits. If a piece develops a defect that ordinary wear cannot explain, such as a broken closure, a finish that has failed unexpectedly, or a clasp that no longer holds, the situation moves beyond care.
